Very few people have the opportunity to find, chase, live their dream. Being a marine scientist and an academic have been that dream that's brought me so much fulfilment. My academic path has led me through terrestrial and wildlife management to lab-based microcosm experiments on plankton communities to stable isotope analyses of marine macroinvertebrates through to large-scale fieldwork campaigns to assess the functional biogeography of rocky shore invertebrates and seaweed along the coastline of South Africa. In recent years,I have transitioned from traditional wet lab research to more interdisciplinary work involving social sciences, economics, and policy aspects of marine resource management.
